How to choose and purchase glass cement?
Time:2025-02-06
Glass cement is an unassuming auxiliary material in decorative materials, yet it plays a crucial role in decoration. Glass cement can bond a wide range of materials, such as glass, ceramics, metals, hard plastics, aluminum-plastic panels, stone, wood, bricks and tiles, cement, etc. The varieties of glass cement on the market are also diverse, ranging from single-component to two-component, acidic to neutral, silicone-based to high-priced or low-priced. How can one choose a glass cement that has good performance in construction and decoration, strong bonding strength, pure color, and a reasonable price? Industry experts believe that the glass cement market is a mix of good and bad products. Consumers only need to possess the following common sense:
1. Don't try to save time or be tempted by cheapness:
Although glass cement has been widely used in decoration and renovation, most users (some of whom are long-time users of glass cement) still prioritize cheap products. As long as the project owner does not specify a brand of glass cement, choosing low-priced cement is inevitable. However, using low-priced cement not only affects the quality and service life of the project, but more importantly, it is extremely likely to cause rework, delay the construction period, and even result in liability accidents. To make excessive profits, unscrupulous vendors can manipulate the packaging by using thick bottles to reduce the weight of the cement and substituting inferior cement paste for branded cement. The excessive profits they gain lie in the price. A low-grade glass cement of the same weight can be three times cheaper than branded glass cement, but the viscosity and tensile strength of branded glass cement are 3-20 times stronger than that of low-grade glass cement, and its service life is 10-50 times longer. Therefore, engineering units cannot be lazy and should compare products from three different vendors to ensure good project quality; consumers should not be tempted by cheap prices, lest it affect the lifespan of indoor decoration.
2. If you don't understand the product, don't rush to buy it:
Some consumers purchase glass cement without understanding the basic knowledge of the product, and encounter many issues during use. For example: What is the difference between acidic and neutral glass cement? Why can only structural glass cement achieve structural bonding between glass? Why do some transparent glass cements change color? What building materials can glass cement bond with? And so on. If the classification, usage, restrictions, usage methods, and storage life of glass cement are understood before purchase, construction can definitely save expenses, reduce rework during construction, and extend the service life of glass cement.
3. Do not use blindly without understanding the performance:
There are numerous varieties of glass adhesives available in the market, including acidic glass adhesives, neutral weather-resistant adhesives, silicic acid neutral structural adhesives, silicone stone adhesives, neutral mold-proof adhesives, insulating glass adhesives, adhesives specifically for aluminum-plastic panels, adhesives specifically for aquariums, adhesives specifically for large glass surfaces, mold-proof adhesives for bathrooms, acidic structural adhesives, and so on. Users often lack a comprehensive understanding of the classification characteristics, applicability, usage restrictions, and application methods of glass adhesives, and some have never come into contact with them before. Some consumers mistakenly regard glass adhesives as "universal adhesives". Only after discovering that the areas where glass adhesives were used have fallen off or discolored after a year do they begin to investigate the applicability of the glass adhesives. It turns out that different materials require the selection of glass adhesives with different properties. Therefore, not blindly using glass adhesives is one of the conditions for purchasing suitable products.
So, what should we pay attention to when purchasing glass cement?
1. Recognize the brand. Effective registered trademarks, distinct image recognition, reasonable price positioning, and comprehensive after-sales service are the criteria for identifying branded products.
2. Check the packaging. First, check whether there is product name, manufacturer name, specifications, place of origin, color, and production date on the cardboard box, and whether there is a certificate of quality, quality assurance certificate, and product inspection report inside the cardboard box. Second, check whether the content such as purpose, usage, and precautions on the plastic bottle is clear and complete. Third, check whether the net content is accurate. The manufacturer must indicate the specifications, model, and net content (in grams or milliliters) on the packaging bottle.
3. Inspect the quality of the adhesive. First, smell the odor. Second, compare the gloss. Third, inspect the particles. Fourth, observe the bubbles. Fifth, test the curing effect. Sixth, test the tensile strength and viscosity.
